Caren is proud of her Cook Islands Māori heritage and brings this perspective to all her work. She is an accountant by background and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. Caren set up her own consulting business that provides facilitation, planning and governance training to organisations.

For the last 18 years Caren has also been contributing her expertise and perspective to a range of Boards as a Professional Director. She’s held positions on boards in the health, arts, education, community, investment and broadcasting sectors over the years. She was part of the inaugural Pacific Women’s Economic Development Advisory Board and a founding member of the Charities Registration Board. She's currently on the Boards of Te Papa, Radio New Zealand, the Cook Islands Investment Corporation and is Deputy Chair of Creative New Zealand. In 2018 she was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to the Pacific community and to Governance.
