We’re delighted to have spoken with Laura Douglas, who shared the twists and turns of her career journey with The Female Career podcast.

Laura grew up on a sheep and deer farm in Southland, but then spent 10 years in the corporate world both in NZ and overseas. She traded her high heels for gumboots in 2016 when she founded Real Country, a farm tour and experience business based in Queenstown. Laura is also passionate about building confidence in girls and more recently created the Southern Girl Finishing School. No embroidery or comportment classes here though!! Instead Laura helps the girls to become more confident, practical and capable by tackling unfamiliar jobs like jumpstarting a tractor.

"Confidence is not something that you're born with. You have to earn it. Anyone can earn confidence, but the only way you earn it is by doing unfamiliar tasks and doing them as best as you can. You might complete it really, really well, or you might not, but you'll learn something from it. If you constantly only play within your safe zone of what you're familiar and comfortable with, you'll never ever develop confidence."
